I work primarily with fledgling creative-nonfiction writers, helping them tell their own stories. I’ve edited book manuscripts and coached authors who are preparing for their first publications–whether they are self-publishing or working with an agent and a traditional press. I’ve also assisted experienced novelists and poets who are foraying into memoir and/or short personal narratives. I’ve also helped several young-adult writers establish their portfolios and application essays for MFA programs in both fiction and nonfiction.
My work with young writers (middle schoolers and high schoolers) has focused primarily on essays and personal statements for high schools and colleges. As a an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, part of my job was to read admissions essays to ensure proper placement in the university’s writing classes. Later, I spent several years working with young writers at 826 Valencia (both as staff and as a volunteer); during this time I devised new prompts and methods to help young writers prepare for college writing classes.
